Using the premise the best-selling books over the past 100 years equal high appeal for children and adults alike, Nancy A. Anderson, in What Should I Read Aloud?, provides a detailed list of picture books for children of all ages. Any guesses as to which author(s), according to Publisher’s Weekly, have sold the most books to date? Stan and Jan Berenstain, of course! Followed by Mercer Meyer (Little Critter) and then good old Dr. Seuss. The three most popular books of all time are… (drumroll): The Pokey Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey, The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, and Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White! They are all similar in that the main characters are anthropomorphic - animals that act like people. As is turns out, fantasy is the most popular genre in picture books.
This is an easy book to flip through, and it’s neat to see how many in the list you either had read to you as a child or have read to your own children or grandchildren. Pick up the book to find out the rest of the “winners”!
